Co-op Futures
What does the future of co-op housing look like and how do we build it together? This forward-looking stream explores the strategies, partnerships, and systems needed to catalyze sustainable growth across the sector. Sessions cover challenges and opportunities on the horizon and focus on strengthening co-op assets, expanding development capacity, unlocking innovative financing, and advancing environmentally and financially resilient housing. Participants will examine how innovation, collaboration, shared resources, and long-term planning can preserve existing homes while creating new co-op housing for generations to come.
Inclusive Communities
People are at the centre of all co-ops and this stream offers practical ideas for how to support co-op members to make their communities strong, equitable, inclusive and welcoming. Grounded in co-operative values and principles, sessions explore topics such as Reconciliation, human rights, mental health, accessibility, inclusion and belonging.
Governance and Leadership
Effective governance and leadership provide the foundation for vibrant, democratic co-ops. This stream supports current and emerging leaders with practical tools, shared learning, and peer-to-peer exchange to navigate complex issues with confidence. Sessions focus on leadership skills, building strong boards, understanding roles and responsibilities, and mobilizing members. Participants will explore how strong governance structures include an engaged membership, clear and equitable decision-making practices and a healthy co-op culture that ensure co-ops survive and thrive in a changing environment.
Co-op Operations
Strong operations keep co-ops running smoothly and sustainably. This stream focuses on the essential, day-to-day practices that support well-maintained building and building systems, and healthy housing communities. This includes preventative maintenance, risk assessment, financial management and staffing. Sessions explore how effective operations contribute to member well-being, staff and board success, and long-term organizational resilience. Participants will gain practical insights to improve efficiency, strengthen internal systems, and align operations with co-op values and strategic goals.
Co-operative Management Conference (CMC)
The Co-operative Management Conference (CMC) brings together housing co-op managers and staff to strengthen management practice, leadership capacity, and operational resilience. Grounded in CHF Canada’s Strategic Plan, the CMC focuses on learning that promotes community empowerment, supports the maintenance and growth of housing co-ops through long-term financial and asset planning, and fosters strong sector partnerships.
Key to the sector’s Co-op Housing for All vision is a strong, supported and growing pool of staff and managers to work with housing co-ops. To this end, the Co-op Housing Management Accreditation (CHMA), launched in 2024, forms the foundation of the CMC program.
The CMC program includes core and elective CHMA courses, delivered both in-person and virtually, complemented by eight workshops dedicated to housing co-op managers and staff and six joint workshops with the Member Education Forum (MEF). Together, these offerings create a cohesive, integrated learning experience that links day-to-day management practice with broader strategic and sector-wide priorities.
Key learning themes throughout the CMC program include strategy, finance, maintenance, partnerships, planning, community, and leadership. Participants gain practical tools to protect co-op assets, communicate financial information effectively, and support long-term sustainability. Workshops will explore financial reporting, risk management, digital tools (including AI), energy efficiency and innovative practices that strengthen management and maintenance systems and support growth capacity across the sector.
