CLT–Co-op Partnerships: Building Community Power Together

The Upper Hammonds Plains Housing Co-operative is the largest Black-led co-operative housing project of its kind in Canada. Curtis Whiley, Founder & CEO of the Upper Hammonds Plains Community Land Trust, will examine the working relationship between community-led CLTs and co-ops through two place-based stories, from his early co-op work in Nova Scotia to a later full-circle pivot into CLT, co-op and developer leadership. The session highlights how grassroots CLT and co-op partnerships incubate community ownership, how support from CHF Canada, together with unlikely allies such as a local builder, municipal partners and other institutional supporters, helped make the project possible, and reflects on co-ownership structures, trust-building and what genuine allyship looks like in practice.
