Optimizing Supportive Care in MAiD
A comprehensive MAiD assessment requires general knowledge of the available means to relieve patients' suffering. This workshop will provide an overview of what MAiD assessors and providers need to know about treatment options and best practices in psychosocial care, palliative care and rehabilitative medicine.
Upon completion of the workshop participants will be able to:
- Assess demoralization and depression in medical illness, the role of ketamine as an antidepressant and brief existential psychotherapies
- Have detailed discussions about death brokering, the nature of palliative sedation and treatment options for burdensome physical symptoms
- Describe available rehabilitation strategies, common types of assistive devices and community support services
- Reflect on the attitudes and needs of MAiD providers from the lens of terror management theory
