What to see and do

A visit to Halifax has to include exploring what this great multicultural city has to offer. Between the gorgeous waterfront, historic sites and colourful, bustling streets, Halifax is most certainly a picturesque city. Soak up the scenery and dive into its rich past:

  • Halifax Citadel National Historic Site* in downtown Halifax offers visitors a chance to roam the hilltop fortress, delve into the city’s military history and step back in time as a Highlander.
  • The Old Town Clock on Citadel Hill was originally installed in 1803, and while it underwent restoration in the 1960s, the original clockwork remains intact.
  • The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic* enthralls visitors with tales from the sea, including one of the greatest disasters in Canadian history, the Halifax Explosion in December 1917, and the sinking of the unsinkable Titanic in April 1912.
  • The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21* offers countless stories of those who journeyed to this country: one in five new Canadians stepped though this entry point between 1928 and 1971.
  • The Africville Museum* recalls the story of the community founded by Black Nova Scotians in the mid-18th century but which was demolished in the 1960s after years of neglect by the city.
  • City Hall is a statuesque building overlooking the Parade Square.
  • The new Halifax Central Library* is considered one of the most beautiful libraries in the world.
  • Dating back to the 1800s, the impressive stone Historic Properties comprise three city blocks of Canada’s oldest surviving waterfront warehouses lining the boardwalk and housing a variety of boutiques, services, restaurants and bars.
  • The Gothic Revival Saint Mary’s Cathedral Basilica* boasts the tallest freestanding granite spire in North America.
  • The Discovery Centre, an interactive science museum along Halifax’s waterfront is free on Wednesday evenings.
  • The Museum of Natural History offers a ‘by donation’ time on Wednesday evenings from 5 to 8 pm to visit the collection of Nova Scotian land and sea wonders.
  • Charles Dickens once described Province House*, Canada’s oldest provincial legislative assembly, as “a gem of Georgian architecture…like looking at Westminster through the wrong end of a telescope.”
  • For the sports-minded, no trip would be complete without a stop at the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame*, honouring the province's top athletes, from George Dixon, to Colleen Jones, to Sidney Crosby.
