Dr. Stanley Liu
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Stanley Y. C. Liu, MD, DDS, FACS, FDSRC(Ed) is a dual-trained surgeon recognized for advancing integrated otolaryngology–maxillofacial models of sleep-breathing care. He serves as Chair and Associate Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Director of the Breathe & Sleep Wellness Center at Nova Southeastern University. He previously served as Associate Professor of Otolaryngology at Stanford University, where he directed the Sleep Surgery Fellowship. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Dr. Liu completed his undergraduate education at Stanford University and earned both DDS and MD degrees from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), followed by General Surgery and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training at UCSF and subspecialty sleep surgery training within Stanford Otolaryngology under Dr. Robert Riley. He also completed the Stanford Biodesign Faculty Fellowship.
His clinical and academic work focuses on surgical management of obstructive sleep apnea. He led modernization of the Riley–Powell Stanford sleep surgery protocol by incorporating DISE-driven decision pathways, maxillary expansion strategies, and integration with neuromodulation.
In parallel, Dr. Liu mentors early-stage medical technology and health innovation companies. He advised Pocket Kado, a digital therapeutic platform for insomnia that received the National Sleep Foundation’s 2023 SleepTech Award.
Dr. Liu has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, textbooks, and book chapters. His work integrating hypoglossal nerve stimulation with skeletal airway surgery received the Stanton Award from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He has served on World Sleep Congress and World Sleep Society scientific initiatives and has delivered keynote lectures at APSS SLEEP and the World Sleep Congress. He is the incoming Deputy President and Chair of the OSA Intervention Committee for the Global Initiative for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (GIFOSA).
Dr. Olivier Vanderveken
Antwerp University Hospital
Prof. Dr. Olivier M. Vanderveken, MD, PhD, is a full-time ENT, Head and Neck Surgeon at the Antwerp University Hospital in Belgium. He is appointed as Chairman of the Department of ENT-HNS at Antwerp University Hospital. He holds a position as Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Antwerp. Prof. Dr. Vanderveken received his medical degree from University of Antwerp in 2001. He completed an ENT, Head and Neck Surgery residency at the Antwerp University Hospitals. In 2007, he obtained a PhD in Medical Sciences on the topic of the fundamental and multidisciplinary approach to upper airway collapse during sleep-disordered breathing. His main research is in the area of sleep-disordered breathing, in particular pathophysiological assessment of upper airway collapse including phenotyping, drug-induced sedation endoscopy, treatment of sleep apnea with mandibular advancement devices and upper airway surgery including hypoglossal nerve stimulation and transoral robotic surgery. His other research topic is in the area of the microbiota of the upper respiratory tract. Prof. Dr. Vanderveken has co-authored several professional scientific publications in high-impact peer reviewed journals. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal 'Sleep and Breathing' and the Deputy Editor of the ‘Journal of Dental Sleep Medicine’. In the past, Olivier Vanderveken has been awarded several national and international scientific awards including the “AADSM Clinical Research Award” in 2011, the “AADSM Clinical Excellence Award” in 2011 and the “Pierre Robin Academic Award” of AADSM in 2012 from American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. Olivier Vanderveken holds a Senior Clinical Investigator Fellowship at the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) in Belgium supporting him to pursue a full-fledged career in translational research. Professor Vanderveken is the founding President of the 'interdisciplinary Belgian Dental Sleep Medicine Academy (iBEDSMA)', is a member of the board of the Belgian Oto-Rhino-Laryngology and Head and Neck Surgery Association and is currently appointed as the vice-president of the Medical Board at Antwerp University Hospital.
