Tina Huizinga

Tina Huizinga

Tina Huizinga PC

Alberta

Despite having no lawyers in her family, Tina resolved at age 5 to become a lawyer, much to the bafflement of her parents. In law school the plan was to be a Crown Prosecutor, but alas, the government declined to co-operate with that plan, leading to articles at a general firm, where she was exposed to all areas.

Tina’s early practice involved family, criminal, employment and civil litigation. She commenced solely practicing in the area of family law in 2007, with a special interest in appellate work, and ultimately arbitration of family disputes. She has appeared at all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada.

She became a nationally certified arbitrator in 2015, and is a designated Chartered Arbitrator through ADRIC.

She was appointed King’s Counsel in 2022.

Tina has chaired numerous LESA panels, and presented for both LESA and the CBA over the years. She was a sessional instructor for Techniques in Negotiations at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law for 5 years, and has guest lectured numerous times for other courses. She has been a volunteer instructor with CPLED, teaching oral advocacy, and was an instructor at the Intensive Trial Advocacy course.

Tina believes that mediation, using combined interest-based and evaluative methods, are a better path for families to resolve their disputes in a timely and cost-effective way. Her focus is on finding creative solutions to complex issues that may not be possible in a traditional litigation model, and providing the parties with options for resolution to consider. She equally understands that sometimes agreement is not always possible, and arbitration is sometimes required. As a result of that, she is winding up her litigation practice to solely conduct mediations and arbitrations.
