Welcome to the Richard K. Reznick Wilson Centre Virtual Research Week Registration page. What a year 2020 has been! The COVID-19 pandemic has create challenges and opportunities for us as a community. Health professions education was profoundly affected by the pandemic including a significant disruption of the ‘normal’ way of doing things. This includes our annual research day which is now spread out over the course of three days during the week of October of the 26th to the 30th in a virtual format. Our podium sessions will be held over 3 virtual sessions to enable maximum attendance followed by our keynote and panel presentation on the 30th. Our poster session is in a virtual asynchronous format to allow maximum engagement and discussion. In deciding on the new format, we strove to maintain the elements that our participants love with the recognition of the limits – and advantages – imposed by a virtual format.

As such, the important things about research day – the exemplary cutting edge scholarship, the opportunity to engage with new ideas, the celebration of research – have been preserved. This year we have 17 Podium presentations and 19 Posters showcasing a broad cross-section of the research and scholarship conducted by Wilson Centre members. The work covers both urgent issues such as the health professions education community’s response to COVID-19 as well as timeless and enduring challenges in education scholarship. Virtual options have been provided for participants to engage with the speakers as well as with each other during the course of the events. Still, we regret we cannot accommodate some of the other things that our participants really enjoy: the close networking, the congenial atmosphere of Vaughn Estates, and the delicious crab cakes. I hope you take the opportunity to recreate some of that atmosphere in your home or office as you listen to our presenters.

We are especially excited to welcome Dr. Tara Fenwick to present this year’s keynote address. Dr. Fenwick will be speaking on “New Terrains for Professional Responsibility”. Following this, there is a panel discussion on “Spotlight on Generalism ”. These presentations highlight exciting areas of exploration that are very relevant to the current challenges facing the healthcare system.

Our events are not just a forum for sharing education scholarship. They are a celebration of a vibrant and thriving community of students and faculty who are passionate about improving education in the health professions. This event would not be possible without the help of the Research Day Committee, our moderators and poster judges, as well as the Wilson Centre staff who work tirelessly to make this day a success. Above all, we would like to thank all of our presenters and participants for their continued support.

The Richard K. Reznick Wilson Centre Research Day annual research day was established to celebrate the remarkable depth and breadth of scholarship in health professions education underway at the University of Toronto and the University Health Network. Whether in person or virtual, we will continue to highlight our community’s successes and accomplishments.

On behalf of the Research Day Committee, we hope you have a stimulating and thought provoking experience.

Sincerely,

Kulamakan (Mahan) Kulasegaram, PhD
