Dr. Istvan Mucsi is a transplant nephrologist and clinician investigator at the Ajmera Transplant Centre. He is a Professor of Medicine at University of Toronto.
His research focuses on identifying novel ways of assessing and managing physical and emotional symptoms using Patient Reported Outcomes Measures.
He is the clinical lead for UHN`s PROM strategy scoping project; and an "expert advisor" of the Canadian Donation and Transplant Research Program. He is the Hungarian national representative in the PROMIS Health Organization International Network.
He is also leading research projects in partnership with racialized community organizations and First Nations to understand barriers and inequities that patients from these communities face when considering kidney transplantation and living donor kidney transplantation

Dr. Richard Norman is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Toronto. His clinical work focuses on geriatric medicine in the acute care and rehabilitation settings. He leads the Section of Geriatric Medicine at University Health Network as well as the organization’s Older Adult Strategy. He has completed advanced training in quality improvement, including a Master’s Degree in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety and completion of the Quality Scholars program through the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. He has a scholarly interest in improving the care of older people and the development of new models of care.

Daniel Sibley is a registered kinesiologist and postdoctoral researcher at University Health Network. His current research investigates supportive care strategies for older adults with cancer, such as comprehensive geriatric assessment. He completed his PhD at the University of Toronto in 2025 in surgical prehabilitation and exercise oncology.

Dr. Sasan Hosseini is a specialist in Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine with fellowship training in Transplant Infectious Diseases at the University of Toronto. He also holds MSc degrees in Public Health, Epidemiology, and Biostatistics and serves as an ICES Scientist. He previously served as Medical Director of Transplant Infectious Diseases at London Health Sciences Centre and Western University from 2014 to 2019, and later as Transplant Infectious Diseases Fellowship Director at the Ajmera Transplant Centre, University Health Network from 2021 to 2024. Since 2022, he has served as Fellowship Director for the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Atul Humar is a Professor in the Department of Medicine, University of Toronto. Dr. Humar received his medical degree from the University of Ottawa. He completed his residency and did further training in Transplant Infectious Diseases in Toronto and Boston. Dr. Humar’s research interests are in Transplant Infections, with a focus on the prevention and treatment of Cytomegalovirus, along with other opportunistic viruses, as well as the immunologic and virologic determinants of infection. Dr. Humar has over 300 publications in these areas. His work was integral to the development of internationally used guidelines related to the management of CMV post-transplant. Dr. Humar recently completed his terms as the Director of the Ajmera Transplant Centre at the University Health Network, and as the Director of the University of Toronto Transplant Institute. He is also the Past-President of the Canadian Society of Transplantation. Dr. Humar is a counselor for the Transplantation Society (TTS) Board.

Dr. Shahid Husain, a distinguished figure in Internal Medicine, completed his residency at Cook County Hospital and pursued a three-year Infectious Diseases Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), specializing in Transplant Infectious Diseases. He further enhanced his expertise with a master’s degree in clinical Trials from the University of Pittsburgh. After his tenure as a faculty member at UPMC, Dr. Husain joined the University of Toronto in 2008.
An internationally acclaimed expert in Transplant Infectious Diseases, Dr. Husain has held the prestigious position of Chairman of the Infectious Diseases Council at the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation. His commitment to the field extends to his active involvement with the Canadian Society of Transplantation, where he currently chairs the Transplant Infectious Diseases group.
Dr. Husain's contributions to the European Confederation of Medical Mycology (ECMM) are noteworthy, including his roles as a fellow and a key member in the global guidelines committees for Candida and Aspergillosis. His expertise is further recognized through his active participation in EFISG, as well as his roles as a grant and abstract reviewer for the ECCMID conference. Dr. Husain has been instrumental in shaping guidelines for managing infections in solid organ transplant recipients, leading on behalf of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation and the American Society of Transplantation. He also serves on the American Thoracic Society and Infectious Diseases Society of America's (IDSA) Aspergillus guideline panel.
Dr. Husain's research interests primarily focus on infection risks and outcomes in solid organ transplant recipients, with a keen interest in antibiotic stewardship for immunocompromised patients. His clinical research, funded by prestigious bodies like the National Institute of Health, Canadian Institute of Health Research, and the Center for Disease Control, aims to advance diagnostic tests for invasive aspergillosis and develop effective prophylactic strategies against viral, bacterial, and fungal infections in immunocompromised hosts. Dr. Husain has also served as a grant reviewer for the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR).
With over 200 peer-reviewed publications and authorship of more than seven book chapters, Dr. Husain's academic contributions are substantial. He also plays a vital role as a reviewer for various medical journals. His passion for education is evident in his establishment of the world’s largest structured Transplant Infectious Diseases Fellowship program in 2009. Dr. Husain has served as the Director of Research at the Ajmera Transplant Centre, Toronto General Hospital, and currently serves as the medical Director of Antimicrobial Stewardship program within the University Health Network, nurturing the next generation of transplant physicians.

Dr. Deepali Kumar is a Professor of Medicine and Director of the Toronto Transplantation Institute, University of Toronto, as well as Director of the Ajmera Transplant Centre at the University Health Network in Toronto, Canada. Dr. Kumar is also attending physician on the Transplant Infectious Diseases service at University Health Network. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Ottawa and did infectious disease training at the University of California-San Diego and McMaster University. She further did a Masters degree with a focus in transplantation at the University of Toronto. Dr. Kumar has a translational research program that consists of both clinical and laboratory-based research. Her research focuses on immunologic responses to vaccines and viral infections in immuncompromised persons. She has supervised numerous graduate students and medical residents/fellows. She has authored over 250 manuscripts, editorials, and book chapters in the field of transplantation. She has held leadership roles in the Canadian Society of Transplantation and is a Past-President of the American Society of Transplantation.

Dr. Coleman Rotstein is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Toronto. He received his medical degree from the University of Calgary in 1976. Dr. Rotstein completed his specialty training in Internal Medicine and pursued further subspecialty training in Infectious Diseases & Immunology at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. He is currently the Interim Director of Transplant and Oncology Infectious Diseases at the University Health Network.

Dr. Gotlieb obtained her medical degree at Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary in 2009. She completed her Internal Medicine and gastroenterology training in Tel Aviv and a fellowship in Transplant Hepatology in Toronto
Dr. Gotlieb is the medical lead of the pre and post liver transplant clinic at the Ottawa hospital. She also practices Gastroenterology and general Hepatology. She is involved in education and research with a main interest of pre and post transplant care optimization.

Dr. Chaya Shwaartz is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto and a staff surgeon in the Division of General Surgery at the University Health Network. She earned her medical degree from Tel-Aviv University, Israel, followed by a general surgery residency at Sheba Medical Center, Israel, and Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Dr. Shwaartz then pursued a clinical fellowship in Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) surgery at Sheba Medical Center, before completing a highly specialized fellowship in Abdominal Transplant and HPB Surgical Oncology at the University of Toronto, Toronto General Hospital.
Her clinical expertise lies in minimally invasive HPB surgery including robotic surgery. As the surgical lead of the HPB Center, she oversees multidisciplinary efforts in surgical innovation, research, and education. Dr.Shwaartz is also the Program Director for the Abdominal Transplant and HPB Surgery Fellowships at the University of Toronto and the Director of postgraduate surgical education at UHN, reflecting her passion for surgical education. She has been recognized with multiple awards for her excellence in surgical education.

Dr. Julie Tan is Assistant Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology at McMaster University. She completed her PhD and medical degree at the University of Toronto, and underwent residency training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at McMaster University, followed by fellowships in hepatology and transplant hepatology at the University of Toronto. Her academic interests include teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She specializes in the care of patients with liver disease with an interest in pre-and post-liver transplantation.

Dr. Marcelo Cypel is the Director of the Toronto Lung Transplant Program at the University Health Network (UHN) and Full Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto. He is the Surgical Director of the Ajmera Transplant Center (one of top 3 largest transplant centers in North America performing more than 800 transplants/year) and the Surgical Director of the ECLS program at UHN. He received his MD in 1999 and completed his general surgery and thoracic surgery residency program in 2004. In 2005, he started his post-doctoral research fellowship at the Latner Thoracic Surgery Laboratory and currently serves as a Senior Scientist at UHN. During this time, he co-developed a new method of lung preservation and donor lung repair called Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion (EVLP). This method is now used clinically in Toronto and in many other centers and has significantly increased the number of transplantable lungs. Dr. Cypel was a two-time awardee of the prestigious Canada Research Chair in Lung Transplantation from the Government of Canada, and he is the principal investigator in very innovative clinical trials, such as the use of uncontrolled donation after cardio-circulatory death for lung transplantation, 10C lung preservation, and in vivo lung perfusion with chemotherapy to treat patients with lung metastases. He is a Member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS), a Fellow from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) and American College of Surgeons (FACS). Dr. Dmitry Rozenberg is a Respirologist at University Health Network and is affiliated with the Ajmera Multi-Organ Transplant Program. He is an Associate Professor in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. He currently holds the National Sanitarium Association Chair in Respiratory Rehabilitation Research at West Park Healthcare Centre (University Health Network). Dr. Rozenberg’s research aims to understand the impact of physical fitness and skeletal muscle function on daily physical function, quality of life, frailty, health care use, and survival before and after lung transplantation. He is collaborating with colleagues to evaluate several modalities of rehabilitation including inspiratory muscle training, telerehabilitation strategies, and implementation of educational resources in solid organ transplantation.

Dr. Scallan’s clinical interests include interstitial lung disease and lung transplantation. His research interests include the role of satellite care in lung transplantation and health related quality of life in patients with ILD.

Tina Cheung is Nurse Practitioner in the Endocrinology Program at the University Health Network and an Adjunct Lecturer of the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto. She leads the Transitional Diabetes Clinic at Toronto General Hospital which specializes in diabetes care in specialized populations such as post solid organ transplant recipients. Her research and interests focus on quality improvement and innovation. She was awarded the Registered Nurses Foundation of Ontario Innovation Award in recognition of her pioneering work in enhancing patient experience through innovative approaches.

Dr. Joseph Kim is a staff nephrologist in the Division of Nephrology and Director of the Kidney Transplant Program at the Toronto General Hospital, University Health Network. He is also a Professor in the Department of Medicine and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. Dr. Kim completed medical school, internal medicine residency, chief medical residency, and fellowships in nephrology and kidney transplantation at the University of Toronto. In 2008, he earned a PhD in epidemiology and a Master of Health Science in biostatistics at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. In 2020, he completed a Global Executive MBA for Healthcare and the Life Sciences at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. Dr. Kim’s research interests include access to and outcomes of kidney transplantation using centre- and population-based cohorts as well as using data more effectively to inform health system improvement.

She is leading initiatives focused on Transfer of Accountability and Information (TOAI), optimizing transitions of care, and expanding outpatient multidisciplinary care for transplant recipients, including the development of Transplant Day Unit 2.0.

Dr. Natasha Aleksova obtained her medical degree from the

fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital. Natasha obtained her MSc in Health Research
Methodology from McMaster University and successfully defended her thesis in 2022.
Natasha is a heart failure/transplant cardiologist at Toronto General Hospital.
Her research interests include clinical trials in the advanced heart
failure/transplantation population, as well as the evaluation of outcomes in
heart transplant recipients.
