PRESIDENT’S ELECT MESSAGE

It is with great joy and honour that I welcome you to the 2025 Educational Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Federation of Medical Women of Canada (FMWC). The theme for this year’s conference is Women Physicians Empowering for Change.

We are part of a nation that is dealing with many uncertainties that include a trade war which has significant impact on everyone and the proliferation of mis- and disinformation on women’s health care on social media. Additionally, in March 2025 at the height of the United Nations summit the Canadian government eliminated the ministerial position for women and gender equality. Many organizations have signed a petition against this action.

The reproductive rights and freedom of women is under threat in many parts of the world. FMWC stands with other organizations in protecting the rights of women and girls. Our presence was felt at the UNCSW 69 which took place in New York City in March 2025.

According to Maya Angelo---” Each time a woman stands up for herself without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women”

On a brighter note, we celebrate the proclamation of Bill C-64, the Pharmacare act which was passed in October 2024 providing free contraception and diabetes medication. Furthermore, in Ontario, Bill 209 2024 was passed, proclaiming the month of April as Black Maternal Health and Reproductive Justice month raising awareness on the barriers and disparities that exist within the healthcare system. The Black Maternal Health week will be celebrated from April 11-17 every year.

The FMWC conferences reflect our mission of advancing women physicians and trainees. This year’s theme is no exception. The conference will begin with a welcome reception and a night of fun, followed by 2 days of learning and networking from accomplished and experienced speakers.

The conference will focus on patients’ facing issues, female physicians and learners’ wellbeing and leadership. Our special learners’ corner will provide opportunities for engagement, reverse mentorship and inclusive leadership.

Lastly, I do hope that you would explore the beautiful city of Toronto, the most diverse and racialized city in Canada. Toronto is home to the Raptors, Maple Leafs, Blue Jays, Argonauts and Toronto Sceptres. Explore the fine cuisine and dining all within walking distance within the downtown.

Together with your support, the FMWC will continue to advocate, support, mentor and inspire generations of Women physicians.

I look forward to seeing you all there.

Modupe Tunde-Byass
President-Elect,
Federation of Medical Women of Canada
