We are proud and excited to celebrate 100 years of Medical Women in Canada!

100th Anniversary Planning Committee, Co-Chairs:

Dr. Shelley Ross, MD

Dr. Mamta Gautam, MD

Please join us for the 100th anniversary celebration of the Federation of Medical Women of Canada.

This centenary celebration will be held at the Chateau Laurier Hotel, in Ottawa, September 27-28, 2024.  the events will kick off with a cocktail reception the evening of Thursday, September 26 at the prestigious Sir. John A. McDonald Building.  The conference will highlight our many achievements in Advocacy for Society, Advocacy for our Patients and Advocacy for Ourselves.

The theme, CATALYSTS FOR CHANGE: Celebrating 100 Years of Medical Women in Canada, will look at the past, present and the future. We are privileged to have three honorary co-chairs, who need little introduction:

  • Past: Dr. May Cohen, a pioneering physician for women's rights, whose past work continues to inspire us all;
  • Present: Dr. Jane Philpott, Dean of Medicine, Queen's University; and a past Member of Parliament, who symbolizes the successes of the present;
  • Future: Santanna Hernandez, a medical student at Calgary, and the first indigenous President of the Canadian Federation of Medical Students, who represents our hopes for the future.

Dr. Theresa Tam is our Honorary Member Awardee for 2024, recognized for her leadership in guiding us through the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. We look forward to hearing about her personal experiences as Canada's Chief Public Health Officer.

Founded by Dr. Maude Abbott, of McGill University, in 1924, the Federation of Medical Women of Canada has a long history of successes. The initial priority of FMWC was to allow women to attend medical school and practice medicine. While that hurdle has been overcome, many other hurdles remain for women in medicine that with require the concerted effort of FMWC in the future. The FMWC remains deeply committed to our mission of enhancing the professional, social, and personal advancement of women physicians, and to the promotion of the well-being of women both in the medical profession and in society at large.

Stay tuned as we share further information about the celebration - the Centennial book, the scarf design competition, amazing speakers and incredible events - leading up to the conference.

We look forward to seeing you in Ottawa!
