He is internationally recognized for the discovery and development of recyclable materials for carbon capture with unparalleled efficiency. Thanks to the high selectivity and low regeneration energy of Sayari’s proprietary materials, his invention is poised to become the leading technology for CO2 capture with direct implications on greenhouse gas effect and global warming.

Experts from the field will share their insights and discuss with participants at this bilingual meeting, offering a thorough reflection on the risks and opportunities of this (r)evolution.

    In-Person Virtual
    Kitsilano Ballroom
    Friday, November 08 9:15 AM - 10:15 AM

    Speaker(s)

Across the globe, climate change is increasing the frequency of extreme wildfires and release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere: “the warming is feeding the warming”. In 2023, Canada experienced the worst wildfire season in recorded history, 15 million hectares burned, millions were affected by wildfire smoke, thousands were displaced, many people lost their homes, and ecosystems already under threat were disrupted.

British Columbia is on the frontlines of this fire story, it is a living lab where the challenges and solutions are being confronted, and researchers, practitioners, and communities are coming together to ask: how do we co-exist with wildfire? Transdisciplinary research, collaboration across Western and Indigenous knowledges, and commitment to decolonial landscape management practices are key.

The Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS) – a research network comprising Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia, University of Northern British Columbia, and University of Victoria – has been funding and coordinating wildfire research regionally and internationally for many years. This session will bring leading researchers and practitioners together in conversation to share their insights and reflections. This interactive dialogue will focus on the importance of ‘good fire’ on the landscape and the shifts in perspective, policy, and planning that is required to create a new narrative that allows us to collectively navigate risk, recovery, and the future of climate and wildfire.

The objects and purposes of the RSC are: To serve Canada and Canadians by recognizing Canada’s leading intellectuals, scholars, researchers and artists and, by mobilizing them in open discussion and debate, to advance knowledge, encourage integrated interdisciplinary understandings and address issues that are critical to Canada and Canadians. Early in 2020, the RSC launched a major initiative to mobilize independent expertise to support Canada’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, over 700 Canadians, 200 publications, 30 peer-reviewed Policy Briefings, 250,000 report downloads, and the world’s only partnership between a national academy and a national newspaper have contributed knowledge and advice domestically and internationally. The impact of the RSC during the COVID-19 pandemic has vividly demonstrated the RSC’s role as a rallying point for independent expertise and its capacity to flourish in partnership. In keeping with RSC’s commitment to mobilize expertise by bringing leading thinkers together to help make a better future, this event will offer five themed discussion groups intended to provide an opportunity for participants to reflect on some key issues impacting Canadian society. Participants will discuss how to frame these issues in a broad, interdisciplinary way; how they might mobilize their expertise and contacts to engage with focused initiatives related to these themes and to identify other themes where members can support the development of knowledge syntheses and outreach relevant to Canadian society. Participants may be able to select two out of five themes. 1. Infrastructure and Disaster Prevention and Response 2. Sustainable Migration 3. Civility 4. Climate Action 5. Security and Safety on the Web
