Join us from November 4-6 in Vancouver, BC, on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ/Selilwitulh (Tseil-Waututh) nations, for the inaugural Tri-Academy Partnership on Indigenous Engagement. Hosted by the Royal Society of Canada in collaboration with the Royal Society of New Zealand Te Apārangi and the Australian Academy of Science, this is the opening event of a three-year series of summits across our partner countries.

The summit will bring together leading scholars and community members from Canada and the Pacific to address the challenges and opportunities facing Indigenous academics today. Aligned with the S7 statement on "Science and Communication of Cultural Heritage: Knowledge and Public Awareness of Our Collective Roots", this year’s event will emphasize the importance of cultural heritage and Indigenous engagement.

“With emphasis upon the rights of Indigenous peoples and how our academies may understand and act upon their responsibilities toward Indigenous engagement, this event will explore how Indigenous perspectives on the sciences, social sciences, humanities, and other areas of scholarly endeavor may provide an important part of our journey toward reconciliation,” said Professor Frank Deer, Chair of the Organizing Committee and President of the RSC College.

About the Event

In a series of keynote addresses and panel discussions, leading scholars from across Canada, Australia and Aotearoa (New Zealand) will explore:

  • How should the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples inform the Academies’ work in respect to Indigenous Engagement?
  • In what ways may we engage with Indigenous peoples for the betterment of our respective academies and the public good?
  • What institutional transformations are necessary to benefit Indigenous engagement?

We look forward to welcoming you to the first of three summits that will enhance our shared understanding and commitment to Indigenous engagement and cultural heritage!
