Background Information about the Course
The 5-Weekend Care of the Elderly Certificate Course was developed by family physicians for family physicians with
the aim of creating a curriculum that specifically addressed the geriatric care learning needs of primary care
practitioners. Having family physicians lead the teaching provides primary care role models with whom physicians
can identify.
The course offers a comprehensive approach to primary clinical care of elderly patients.
Knowledge gained from this course can be used in a variety of settings, including outpatient clinics, inpatient
units, long-term care facilities, and house call visits.
Preliminary evaluation of the course demonstrated
improvement in participants’ self rated knowledge of and confidence in managing common geriatric problems.
Qualitative data also showed positive changes in participants’provision of geriatric care.
