Description:

You don’t need to be a professional to make a difference. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Essentials helps participants recognize signs of declining mental well-being and respond supportively, including in crisis situations. MHFA Essentials is a standardized, licensed program owned and regulated by Opening Minds, the training division of the Mental Health Commission of Canada.

Delivered by Psychological Health & Safety Consultant and experienced MHFA Training Facilitator Elizabeth Eldridge, this course focuses on real-world application. Participants learn how to have meaningful conversations about mental health, reduce stigma, respond to crisis situations and encourage appropriate supports — all while maintaining healthy boundaries and prioritizing their own well-being.

This course is designed for everyday people supporting everyday people. No prior mental health training or clinical background is required.

MHFA Essentials uses interactive learning, guided discussion and practical scenarios to build confidence and understanding. Participants will explore:

  • Mental health as a continuum, recognizing that people move in and out of wellness over time
  • Common mental health challenges and how they may show up in everyday situations
  • The impact of stigma, assumptions and language
  • How to approach someone you’re concerned about with empathy and respect
  • How to listen non-judgmentally and communicate effectively
  • How to offer reassurance and information without overstepping your role
  • How to respond to crisis situations, including recognizing warning signs and knowing what to do next
  • The importance of self-care and setting boundaries when supporting others.
