EMU 2025 will be the launch of Dr. Katie Lin’s SYNAPSE – an interactive, high-yield, practice-changing EM Neuro Course.
Dr. Katie Lin is one of Canada’s finest EM educators with her unique focus on neurological emergencies.
You will learn about the common, the critical, and the commonly missed.
A clinically relevant, comprehensive review of:
- The ‘Golden Hour’ of neuro-protective resuscitation and how to optimize it
- Stroke, TIAs, and common misses and mimics – Concise, evidence-based approach to investigation and management.
- Traumatic Brain Injury – What to Do and Why.
- Headaches in the ED – approach to the common, the dangerous, and the refractory
- Seizures – Stable, Suspect, and Status
- Altered Mental Status & Weakness – a rational ED approach

In addition to a full day of interactive content, included are:
- 1-hour of pre-course review materials (Katie’s simplified approaches to: EM-relevant neuro-anatomy, ED-focused neuro screening exams, and a primer on neuroimaging strategies in the ED)
- curated reference lists of helpful supplementary guidelines and resources
- post-course access to course recordings.
SYNAPSE is designed with clinicians in mind – trainee or a seasoned clinician; urban or rural; physician, resident, nurse, NP, paramedic, or allied healthcare provider. If you manage ED patients with neurologic complaints, SYNAPSE is for you. The content is evidence-based and expert-informed, but the focus is the bedside. You will use your new skills immediately on your next shift.

Course Director/Presenter

Dr. Katie Lin is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Calgary. She works clinically as an Emergency Physician at the Foothills Medical Trauma and Stroke Centre, a Stroke Attending with the Calgary Stroke Program, and a Critical Care Flight Transport Physician with STARS Air Ambulance in Alberta. She also serves on the advisory board for the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Canadian Stroke Best Practice Recommendations Guidelines. She completed her FRCPC emergency medicine residency training and Canadian Stroke Consortium stroke subspecialty training in Calgary alongside a parallel Masters of Public Health through Harvard and she is passionate about med ed, neurocritical care, and interdisciplinary collaboration. As an award-winning educator, she has been invited as a recurring speaker for EM Cases Podcast, EM Updates Conference, the Canadian Stroke Consortium, Thrombosis Canada, and ICEM/CAEP. Outside the hospital and helicopter base, you’ll find her reading, painting, baking, traveling, hiking, trail running, and mountain biking.
