Morning networking 9:00 am – 9:30 am

Start the day reconnecting and making new connections with fellow co-operators.

Morning workshop 9:30 am – 12:00 pm

Understanding roles and responsibilities

How do members of housing co-ops understand who does what, why and when? Even in co-ops where people can wear many hats, it is possible for roles to be clear and understood. Learn about your role (as a member, board member or staff person) and how to stay in your lane. This workshop will provide a clear description of the different roles, who does them and why. Learn what can happen when these roles are confused and how to avoid this. Come prepared to discuss the legal implications of acting beyond the scope of your role within the co-operative enterprise.

Facilitator: Wendy Petersen

Networking lunch 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm

Over a catered lunch a CHF Canada representative will give a regional report from the Board of Directors. We’ll have an opportunity to discuss important issues in Saskatchewan.

Afternoon workshop 1:30 pm – 4:00 pm

Fostering Diverse and Inclusive Communities

Voluntary and open membership is the first of the seven International Co-operative Principles. This means that co-operatives are open to anyone who wants to join, as long as they are willing to accept the responsibilities of membership. During this workshop we’ll discuss how creating diverse and accepting communities is good for building stronger governance and healthier communities. We’ll also learn how to access grant funds to strengthen inclusivity within your housing co-op.

Facilitators: Maria Vaiaso and Wendy Petersen

Maria Vaiaso, Regional Manager, Prairies, CHF Canada

Maria Vaiaso is the CHF Canada Regional Manager to the Prairies. As a “big ideas” person, she has a keen interest in inspiring the next generation of co-operative housing leaders through the Co-op Housing for All vision for sustainability and growth. Maria supports the development of the Co-op Housing for All Peer Network through which sector leaders and innovators tell their stories of success.

Wendy Petersen, Community Development Analyst, Community Futures Westman and Certified CHF Canada Educator

After graduation from Olds College, Wendy has worked for the City of Brandon, Brandon Seniors for Seniors Co-op, the Canadian Red Cross, Westman Immigrant Services and the Aurora Project. Wendy is a Certified Co-op Developer (Co-opZone). She currently serves on the Boards of Brandon Community builders, the CoopZone and Compass Credit Union. Wendy has successfully completed the CHF Canada New Educator Program and is especially interested in offering perspectives on rural communities and how housing co-operatives can be a way to strengthen communities in the prairies.
