Around the Kitchen Table: Reconciliation Begins with You
In the lead-up to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, join us for a morning of meaningful reflection, storytelling, and community dialogue. Around the Kitchen Table invites co-op housing leaders and members to explore what reconciliation truly means—starting with ourselves.
Through guided discussions, shared history, and collective visioning, this workshop creates space to connect with your own cultural identity, deepen your understanding of Indigenous experiences, and consider how the co-operative housing movement can be part of building a more just future. From personal reflection to actionable steps, participants will leave with a “Back Pocket Action Plan” and a renewed sense of their role in reconciliation.
Let’s gather around the kitchen table to listen, learn, and lead change—together.
Facilitator: Bev Cardinal

Bev Cardinal (née Peltier) lives and works in Regina, Saskatchewan, located within Treaty 4, Treaty 6 and Métis Nation territory. Bev is a direct descendent of Red River Métis who settled in the region in the early 1700s as part of the fur trade. These families established several “road allowance” communities within the eastern Qu’Appelle Valley at Katepwa Lake. Bev’s family and extended family are over seven generations strong in this territory.
Bev has made it her career studying, working and volunteering in areas of Indigenous education and post-secondary education, Indigenous governance, community development and social justice. She is a trainer, educator and consultant in areas related to Indigenous awareness, mediation, Indigenous governance, alternative conflict resolution, and holistic and restorative practices within investigative and disciplinary processes. Through the sharing of her lived experiences, traditional knowledge, and professional proficiencies, she provides safe space for uncomfortable truths required for advancing processes of relationship building, decolonization, Indigenization and reconciliation within organizations and communities.
Bev holds certifications as a Mediator and Workplace Investigator, an Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Management, and is a well respected trainer and educator. She currently holds the position of Coordinator, Indigenous Engagement with the City of Regina.

Afternoon workshop 1:30 – 4:00 pm
Clear, Kind & Accountable: Transparency and Communication in a Healthy Co-op Democracy
Strong co-ops are built on trust—and trust is built through clear, consistent communication. In this interactive workshop, we’ll explore how transparency and tone shape a healthy democratic culture in housing co-operatives. We’ll unpack what transparency really means (and what it doesn’t), explore practical tools to keep members informed and engaged, and examine how the way we say things matters just as much as what we say.
Whether you're a board member, staff, or an active co-op resident, this session will offer actionable strategies to improve communication, prevent misunderstandings, and foster a sense of shared ownership and trust in your co-op community.
