Health Workforce Safety: Strategies for Safe Workplaces and Worker Wellbeing
Summary:
This workshop is designed to address the pressing and escalating issues of worker safety and wellbeing in the health system. While the ultimate goal is safety for all, this workshop will be a powerful step toward protecting those who provide care by addressing violence against health workers. The workshop will enhance understanding and encourage leaders to take actions towards improving worker safety in healthcare settings. It will provide the opportunity for leader reflection and sharing, explore the balance between worker safety and the duty to care, explore real world scenarios and leader responses, focus on addressing systemic factors affecting safety, and identify actions leaders can take to foster a holistic culture of safety and support.
Objectives:
- Increase participants understanding of the critical importance, prevalence and impact of workplace violence being experienced by health care workers.
- Identify and discuss ways to reduce the rates and impacts of violence on health care worker wellbeing and retention, patient care, and system stability.
- Highlight system-level drivers contributing to safety issues for workers and workplaces - including workload, concerns related to psychological and cultural safety, and limited employee autonomy.
- Share case examples and cross-industry successes that contribute to safe workplaces, workers feeling safe, and a safe system.
