The opening keynote will focus on worker wellness and team-based care, drawing on the need for multiple voices and collaboration across healthcare.

Keynote Speakers

Tara Kiran, MD, MSc, CCFP, FCFP

Family Physician, St. Michael’s Hospital, Unity Health Toronto; Scientist, MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions; Fidani Chair of Improvement & Innovation, University of Toronto

A family doctor and renowned primary care researcher, Tara Kiran investigates how changes in the health care system impact patients, particularly the most vulnerable. In her research and practice, she develops and tests solutions to make health care more inclusive and more effective.

Much of Tara’s research has evaluated how primary care reforms have impacted quality of care. She also leads research to directly improve quality of care including initiatives to measure and reduce care disparities, engage patients in health service improvement, and support physicians to learn from data. In 2022, Tara launched OurCare, a national initiative to engage the public in co-creating the blueprint for a stronger, more equitable primary care system in Canada.

Tara holds the Fidani Chair of Improvement and Innovation at the University of Toronto. She practices family medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital, Unity Health Toronto. She is the Vice Chair for Quality and Innovation in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto, a Scientist at the MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions at St. Michael’s Hospital, a Senior Adjunct Scientist at ICES and an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. Marcia Anderson, MD, MPH, FRCPC

Internist, Adult Medical Clinic, Grace Hospital, Winnipeg; Vice-Dean Indigenous health social justice and anti-racism, University of Manitoba

Dr. Marcia Anderson is Cree-Anishinaabe and grew up in the North End of Winnipeg with roots in Peguis First Nation and Norway House Cree Nation in Manitoba. She practices Internal Medicine, and serves as the Vice-Dean, Indigenous Health, Social Justice and Anti-Racism in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba. Dr. Anderson serves on multiple national Indigenous health and medical education committees and is a member of Health Workforce Canada’s Board of Directors. In October 2024, Dr. Anderson was appointed as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.

Dr. Anderson has made significant contributions to health equity, public health and medical education across her career. During the COVID-19 pandemic she served as the Public Health Lead of the Manitoba First Nations Pandemic Response Coordination Team. The team was celebrated for supporting excellent vaccine uptake in First Nation communities in Manitoba. She led the development and implementation of the collection of racial/ ethnic and Indigenous identity during the pandemic, which improved the public health response and vaccine planning. She has since also led the implementation of the collection of race-based data at hospitals in Manitoba, working collaboratively through complex data governance mechanisms. The collection of these racial, ethnic and Indigenous identifiers will enable measurement of gaps in health care quality that occur due to multilevel racism, and support interventions and monitoring.

Dr. Anderson has won multiple awards, including the 2022 Doctors Manitoba Physician of the Year award, the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration, and has been twice named one of the Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada by the Women’s Executive Network. Dr. Anderson was invested in the Order of Manitoba in 2024. .
