First Nations Shaping the Future of Inclusive Health Workforce Planning and Strategies

Wednesday October 30th, 1:30 - 3:00 pm ET

Format: In-Person and Virtual

Co-hosted by the FNHMA and FNIGC, this workshop brings together expertise in health management, workforce wellness, and First Nations' data sovereignty. The panel will explore how lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic can be applied to strengthen health workforce planning, professional development, and retention. The focus will be on ensuring that those providing health services to First Nations have the tools, information, and support needed to deliver high-quality care to First Nations peoples and communities.

Understanding the Issues
FNHMA will present an in-depth look at the challenges on the ground, particularly the lack of access to data and information that has hindered workforce planning, recruitment, and retention in local health care settings. This segment will also provide an overview of systemic workforce planning issues faced by health managers and professionals, using a COVID-19 lens to emphasize the urgent need for First Nations to be better prepared for future pandemics.

Focusing on Solutions:
FNIGC will introduce the First Nations Data Governance Strategy (FNDGS) as one of the pathways to data sovereignty, demonstrating how First Nations’ ownership and control of data are essential for building an effective health workforce by enabling better decision-making, strategic planning, and professional growth that empower both individuals and their organizations.

A panel of up to five health and data experts will then respond to questions about their firsthand experiences, challenges, priority needs, and their vision for building a stronger, more inclusive health workforce to serve First Nations peoples.
