Working Together to Define and Measure Comprehensive Family Practice

Wednesday October 30th, 1:30 - 3:00 pm ET

Format: In-Person

A key element in planning and supporting health workers is to understand the breadth of their professional practice. This is particularly so when varied health professions provide similar or identical health services, when they work together in the same teams, and when they care for a shared community and/or group of patients. Data and research can improve our understanding of health professions and how they relate to one other, through overlapping practice scopes and interprofessional teamwork. The need to understand the work of family physicians is uniquely relevant due to their very wide scope of practice, spanning primary and tertiary care settings.

This workshop will engage a wide range of health system workers in the College of Family Physicians of Canada's (CFPC) efforts to define and measure comprehensive family practice. Integrating multiple frameworks, past research, and broad data sources the CFPC has developed a set of core metrics covering the scope of family physicians’ clinical care, primary care roles, professional activities, and practice contexts.

This workshop will explore the emergent set of metrics with participants, assessing its relevance and robustness in measuring the scope of family practice. Workshop participants will discuss data sources and help interpret the data trends that are now being visualized. Input will be sought on the potential to use the definitions and metrics to describe the practice of other health care workers and practice contexts.

Speakers

  • Steve Slade, Director, Research, The College of Family Physicians of Canada
  • Ivy Oandasan, Director, Education, The College of Family Physicians of Canada
