Event Description

The Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) is honoured to host an informative virtual informative seminar and optional interactive virtual workshop focused on academic resilience, leadership, and the development of essential cognitive and non-cognitive skills to support student success presented by Dr. Louis Volante (PhD), a leading researcher in student development and academic resilience. tailored for educators, staff, and professionals supporting student success in higher education.

Informative Virtual Seminar Description

Presented by: Louis Volante, (PhD), Distinguished Professor, Brock University, Professorial Fellow, UNU-MERIT

There is little doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected student learning across the globe, and we need to carefully examine its short- and long-term impacts on student achievement. Not surprisingly, provincial and international education systems have reported significant learning losses in relation to traditional content areas such as reading, mathematics, and science. Yet, the pandemic also severely impacted non-cognitive skills including those related to students’ socioemotional learning, sense of belonging, growth mindset, and bullying. This presentation addresses this timely and often underemphasized issue – namely, the policies and practices that can support academic resilience in both the cognitive and non-cognitive domain. Findings from a recent analysis of approximately 1.45 million students from across Canada, United States, Australia, New Zealand, and the European Union will be shared. The discussion offers strategies, based on the available evidence, to support academic resilience in higher education settings.

The seminar will offer simultaneous interpretation in French offered by Wordly, an artificial intelligence translation software.

The seminar will be recorded, and a copy of the recording will be sent to all registered participants.

Educational leaders are routinely tasked with improving teaching and learning environments by prioritizing professional development and supporting teachers and instructors in K-12 and higher education contexts. Yet, education leaders are also increasingly facing unique challenges today such as growing inequality, persistent learning losses stemming from the pandemic, and significant threats to academic integrity associated with the proliferation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications. This workshop discusses evidence-based solutions to these pressing issues that have been gleaned from contemporary research. Strategies offered during this workshop will focus on higher education settings, with an emphasis on supporting the academic resilience of at-risk student populations.
