Description:

How MRTs can use Quality Improvement Tools to Improve Patient Outcomes: Investigating Delays between Surgery to Initiation of Post-Operative Radiotherapy in Head and Neck Cancer Patients
Madette Galapin, Clinical Specialist Radiation Therapist, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre

This session aims to enhance the attendee’s knowledge of quality improvement tools that can be used to identify gaps in clinical workflows and enhance quality in any medical radiation discipline. This session will use a current quality improvement initiative that looks to address delays in initiating post-operative radiation therapy in patients with head and neck cancer as an example case to describe the steps of performing a root cause analysis and implementation planning.

Objectives:

  • Describe the process of performing a root cause analysis to identify gaps in clinical workflows that lead to adverse patient outcomes.
  • Demonstrate how quality improvement frameworks can identify and enable opportunities to enhance patient outcomes.
