This presentation will provide information from a qualitative study about patients’ perceptions on medical error disclosures in the health care setting. The importance of understanding and meeting patient needs in disclosure protocol will be highlighted. As well, data will be presented on patients’ informational and emotional needs during and after medical error disclosures in areas that have been reported in the literature, as well as in new areas. Finally, the presentation will review how the findings relate to current disclosure practices and provide recommendations for improving future disclosures and informing guidelines.

Objectives:

  • Understand patients' views on medical error disclosure, including their informational and emotional needs.
  • Explore improvements in communication and education about error disclosure to better reflect patient-centered care.
  • Discuss how to support patients and healthcare workers who experience medical error disclosure.
