MRTs’ Role in NG Tube Verification: Enhancing Patient Care
Michelle Murray. General Radiography Practice Resource, University Health Network - JDMI (Joint Department of Medical Imaging)

This presentation examines the challenges of nasogastric (NG) tube verification, including delays, increased radiation from repeat imaging, and verification errors that impact patient care. By expanding the role of Medical Radiation Technologists to conduct preliminary NG tube assessments, there is potential to improve workflow efficiency, reduce radiation exposure, and expedite patient care. The presentation will share findings from a multi-phase study and outline the benefits of interprofessional collaboration in enhancing the safety and quality of NG tube placement.

Objectives:

  • Identify the key challenges associated with verifying nasogastric (NG) tube placement and their impact on patient care and workflow efficiency.
  • Describe the role of Medical Radiation Technologists in improving the NG tube verification process and the potential benefits for patient outcomes.
  • Explore the effectiveness of a structured educational program in empowering MRTs to verify NG tube placement.
