Description:

The Relationship between the Sublaminar Ridge and Spinal Stenosis; a Clinical Story
Gillian Summers, Medical Radiation Sciences (Radiography) Student, Mohawk-McMaster Institute for Applied Health Sciences

This presentation will briefly describe the insertion point of the ligamentum flavum and bony structure called the sublaminar ridge. It will discuss its potential implications on lumbar spinal stenosis and adverse clinical outcomes of spinal decompression surgery. This presentation will retrospectively explore correlations between pre-surgical images of the sublaminar ridge and clinical outcomes of spinal decompression surgery.

Objectives:

  • Introduce a novel method to identify the sublaminar ridge's presence in the lateral recess on pre-surgical imaging scans.
  • Discuss how standardizing pre-surgical imaging may introduce new surgical techniques to spinal decompression surgery, resulting in more successful surgical outcomes.

Don't be Scared! A Better Understanding of Scatter Radiation in Mobile X-Ray Practices
Tat Ming NG, Chairman,Hong Kong Radiographers' Association

Radiographic examinations for non-transportable patients require the use of a portable X-ray machine within the ward environment. Concerns may often be raised on radiation dose to adjacent patients, family caretakers or staff.

Objectives:

  • This study aimed to quantify scatter radiation dose at various distances from the irradiated patient due to portable X-ray exam.
  • To provide detailed information for health workers and caregivers, and enhance their understanding of the topic, especially on how to protect themselves during portable X-ray examinations.
