This presentation aims to describe the changing recommendations and standards for staffing in MRI departments. It will discuss the additional strain that a new DAP Standard placed on MRI Departments struggling with Technologist shortages and increasing wait times. In 2023 the Vernon Jubilee Hospital hired and trained Technologist assistants to help in the MRI Department. This presentation will discuss the change management process, lessons learned and the ongoing Quality Improvement processes with this initiative.

Objectives:

  • Discuss the challenges in establishing trust and confidence while introducing a new role into a unique environment.
  • Describe the training program that is unique for the MRI environment and how it has evolved.
  • Explore the impact this change has had on staff morale, burnout and department efficiencies.

Tackling the Bottlenecks in MRI Human Health Resources

MRI first discipline education was launched in Ontario to tackle the immediate and urgent human health shortage of MRI technologists.Opening access to MRI education for non-imaging professionals is an opportunity to innovate and transform a new generation of trainees while ensuring high quality education.This will require engagement at all levels of the MRIT professional frameworks including CMRITO, CAMRT, OAMRS, MRI education programs and clinical partners.This presentation hopes to illuminate on the current situation and create a culture shift for supporting MRI first discipline education.

Objectives:

  • Understand the current status of HHR needs Describe traditional MRI education
  • Describe the onset of first discipline MRI education and supporting literature
  • Create a culture shift for MRI curriculum and clinical education Review the implications and need for mentorship in MRI on the front lines
