The Education Portfolio in Lower Mainland BC has just recently launched an MRT/Sonographer Educator Portfolio to support the education and continuing competence of MRTs across the lifespan of their careers. This newly launched portfolio has a number of objectives including identifying gaps in professional development for MRTs, investigating upskilling and optimizing scope of practice, supporting the onboarding of new hires, collaborating with educational institutions and working with the BC Ministry of Health on the BC Allied Health initiative to attract, train, retrain and retain medical imaging staff.

Objectives:

  • Identify the need for medical imaging educators.
  • Discuss the goals of creating post graduate medical imaging educators.
  • Define the role of the clinical educators.
  • Share recent successes of the educator portfolio.
  • Discuss the future of MRT clinical educators.

This session will be 20 minutes, with 5 minutes of Q&A


MRT Research and Quality Improvement in the Operational World

Objectives:

Understand the attributes of a leader that contributes to furthering research and quality improvement in the operational world.

  • Explore how a clinical leader supports work in each of the pillars of clinical research including: education, practice, research, expert clinical care, innovation and application of artificial intelligence.
  • Define the leader role in such projects versus what would be expected of a true researcher.
  • Touch on operational considerations including how to carve out time for project work and the value of investment in this work

Importance of culture change to the continued success of projects

  • Identify the required supports that would be needed including invested sponsors and engaging the entire team from project planning stage to sustainability.
  • Explore an example of poor change management versus an example of a successful one. Discuss differences with audience
  • Underline the need for data driven decisions and increasing capacity within imaging for analytics

Appreciate the contributions of MRT led research to existing overall quality improvement and patient care

  • Highlight the unique features of the MRT role during imaging procedures and identify projects that would positively benefit from this perspective
  • Present universal project topics that could be future improvement areas, e.g. pre and post procedure patient education
  • Explore internal and external partnership opportunities available to MRT’s working in a hospital or IHF setting.
  • Discuss how to build leaders within the next generation of MRT’s
