Description:

Total body irradiation (TBI) is a radiation therapy technique that involves exposing the entire body to ionizing radiation to prepare patients for bone marrow transplantation or to treat certain cancers. Initially, delivered using specialty technology and techniques, its accessibility was limited to only a few major cancer centers. With advances in technology, TBI delivery has become more precise and easier to adopt and is now available at many cancer treatment centers across Canada.

By the end of this session delegates will be able to:

  • Identify historical approaches to TBI, their limitations and considerations
  • Describe evolving techniques and technologies and their adoption across the pan-Canadian landscape
  • Compare and contrast the advantages of historical and evolving approaches to TBI
  • Describe some of the programmatic considerations required for the adoption of a novel TBI program
