Overcoming Barriers to Accessing Diagnostic Imaging Procedures in Marginalized Communities (11:10-11:35)

Objectives:

  • Describe socially constructed normative expectations of Canada’s marginalized peoples, most notably Canada’s Indigenous and LGBTQ+  communities’
  • Discuss experiences with accessing healthcare with the concepts of racism,  lack of trust and lack of cultural competence in healthcare professionals.
  • Expand upon individual strategies that MRTs can embed in their daily activity to help change systemic attitudes.
  • Describe initiatives to bring imaging to these communities. 
  • Introduce Cancer Care Ontario's, Screen for Life program  by exploring Anne's personal experiences as a Mammographer bringing cancer screening to the LGBTQ+ communities. 
  • Introduce Fujifilm's newest portable x-ray unit, the FDR X-Air as a means to bring diagnostic imaging technology to remote Indigenous communities in Northern Canada

This session will be 25 minutes (20 minute presentation with 5 minutes of Q&A)


Transgender and Gender Diverse Curriculum in Medical Imaging Programs  (11:35-12:00)

  • Discuss the importance and impact of including transgender and gender diverse specific curriculum in medical imaging programs.
  • Introduce learners to methods and examples of creating gender inclusive language in learning materials.
