It is my absolute pleasure to welcome you to the 126th Annual General Meeting of the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

This year’s meeting theme is “Building on the Cornerstone”, which compliments the theme of last year’s 125th AGM. It seems that life itself is moving faster than ever. Technology is improving faster than ever. Change is occurring faster than ever. Therefore, in order to keep up, we must keep building on the success of our past!

This year’s AGM is shaping up to be the best one yet! On Wednesday, we will receive an update from each of the Commission Chairs on the status of the work that our various committees have completed. We will also hear about the research completed identifying how many surveyors we need to properly provide surveying services in Ontario. Along with this, we will have a presentation on the cost of research. These topics have been chosen with the hope of stimulating discussion by the members during our first Open Forum on Wednesday afternoon.

On Wednesday afternoon, we will have the privilege of listening to our keynote speaker, Eric Termuende who is on a mission to change the way we think about work. He is a renowned speaker who is a thought-leader on optimizing workplace culture, the future of work and engagement in the workplace.

Our traditional Veterans’ Dinner will take place on Wednesday night, and this year, Brian Maloney will act as our Master of Ceremonies. The Welcoming Party, also held on Wednesday night, will be a fun filled gala. It will be held in the Exhibit Hall and is an opportunity for everyone to support our exhibitors and catch up with friends.

Thursday is our educational day. The day will begin with the Beach Task Force and the Standards Committee presenting their findings on survey issues in the province. Following this, we have seven 1.5 hour-long presentations available for you to choose from. Some of these will repeat both morning and afternoon, so you will have an opportunity to pick and choose the ones you want to attend.

On Thursday, please plan to attend the Convocation Lunch and support our newly commissioned surveyors! This day concludes with the formal President’s Dinner and Dance with music provided by the Saturday Night Superstars.

We will conclude our program on Friday with our usual business meetings and the second Open Forum. Your attendance at most of the events counts towards your Continuing Professional Development. Please see the Schedule of Events below for details on CPD hours and categories.

Plan to stay an extra night or two and take in the things Niagara Falls has to offer – new LED lighting on the Falls, wonderful Festival of Lights displays; take in Rock of Ages at Fallsview Casino Avalon Theatre, or the outdoor Whisky bar and ice skating at Wayne Gretzky Estates Winery and Distillery.

Lots to do! I look forward to seeing you there.

Al Heywood, AGM Chair
